Inanna's Praise

unknown fragment from Religions of the Ancient Near East by Helmer Ringgren, translated by John Sturdy London, SPCK. Page 10

'My father has given me the heaven, has given me the earth, I am the Lady of Heaven. Does any, even a god, compete with me? Lordship he has given me, the position of the lady he has given me, The battle he has given me, the tumult of battle he has given me, The hurricane he has given me, the whirlwind he has given me. Heaven he has placed as a crown on my head, The earth he has set as a sandal on my foot, The shining cloak of the gods he has put around me, Given me the shining sceptre in my hand.'
