The Works of F. Robert Kelly

I WENT UP TO CALIFORNIA

SUNG TO THE TUNE OF "I WENT DOWN TO
ALABAMA WITH A BANJO ON MY KNEE"

VERSE 1

I went down to Texas,
In the summer of '63,
Well the ground was hot; the air was hotter,
And it was just too damn hot for me.

CHORUS 1

So I went to California,
To swim the deep blue sea,
Cause I'd been on down to Texas,
And it was just too damn hot for me.

VERSE 2

I went on to Alabama,
To see my ma and pa,
But they had gone fishin' in their new Buick car,
And then down at the water hole,
What a sight I did see, my ma and pa they were there,
And as naked as can be.

CHORUS 2

So I went up to California,
To swim the deep blue sea,
Cause I'd been down to Alabama,
And there was just too much too see.

Oh lord yes, I think I'll be warped for life now,
Oh my poor fragile mind.

VERSE 3

Now I decided to see Los Vegas,
Cause I'd heard they had heaps of gambling games,
Well I met a girl, who was a guy,
And oh my lord the shame.

CHORUS 3

So I went up to California,
To swim the deep blue sea,
Cause I'd been to Los Vegas,
And it was just too embarrassin' for me.

VERSE 4

Then I went over to Nashville,
Cause I'd heard there was country music there,
And I met this weird old lady,
With snakes a slitherin' through her hair.

She asked me "sonny can I have a kiss?"
I answered "m'am I am not your beef"
She opened her mouth and man I saw,
She had these vampire teeth.

CHORUS 4

So I went up to California,
To swim the deep blue sea,
Cause I'd been down to Nashville,
And it was just too scary for me.

VERSE 5

So now I am old and fragile,
And the grand children I do see,
Or is that don't see?
Depends on the time of day and which glasses I wear,
And they say poppy tell a story, of your much younger days,
And I say, "I've crossed America in oh so many ways,
But I'll always remember when…

CHORUS 5

I went up to California,
To swim the deep blue sea,
Cause I'd been right across America,
And it was just to darn weird for me.

Ohh I went up to California,
To swim the deep blue sea,
Cause I'd been right across America,
And it was just too darn weird for me.

Go on, you'll have to go now, children,
Grandpa's go to change his diaper.
Hmmmmmmppppphhh!!!!

END
