How the Tank Got Its Name

The genesis of the avenue covered 27 trees, and memorialised the fallen State School boys and their teacher. To them truly belongs the title Heroes Avenue, which has since come to encompass all the soldiers in the avenue. These soldiers are listed in their original tree number order, the trees were planted the 20th of September 1918.

The second planting numbered 47 trees, and was conducted in or about April 1919. At this point they believed they had the full complement of 75 locals listed. The Avenue was extended in or about July 1920 with a further 20 men, bringing the total to 94. In August another man named Cogan was to be added, which was never done. Who these last 20 were is not easily determined from the records. The trees were originally marked with small name plates, which very quickly disappeared so that no on knew which tree was for which soldier. These plaques were replaced in 1936 as a project by the R&DRSA under Alan Campbell. These plaques again quickly disappeared.

Four additional trees were planted in 1994 following research by Peter Keegan and Rebecca Kupfer. This was done as part of the renovation of the Avenue tieing in with the new plaques and kerb surrounds to the trees. The 1994 plaques were begun to be replaced in 2002 and continues. The trees below were all installed with the new plaque, which were designed by the Author.
